What is My Lil Boo?

My Lil Boo is a responsive website that helps new parents gain confidence in raising their babies through tracking habits and providing help on health related topics.

The goal of My Lil Boo was to decrease a parent’s worries, as they will be provided with answers to their concerns, and strategies and to help overcome health related problems. As well as help with strategies when it comes to raising a new baby in general.

Research

Competitor Analysis:

I started by viewing four competitors, Baby Center, Huckleberry, Le Baby, and Sprout,  to see what their strengths and weaknesses were.

The overall weakness was that there seemed to be missed opportunities when it came to using cute colors. Some included just trackers and no insights or guides, and vice versa. It made sense to include both to add to the value?

The strengths that I decided to incorporate into My Lil Boo were the use of guides, the simple layouts, trackers and choosing what ones you want on the home screen, description of current month milestones and how to best interact with babies, and an analysis of the habits.

Some extra benefits were dark modes, adding more than one baby.

Interviews:

The interviewees were made up of new parents of babies, below the age of one.

The main problem was what to do when the baby was sick.

Going off of this there was a lack of confidence about when to reach out to the doctors.

New parents did a lot of research with a variety of methods, apps, google searches, books, videos, and other parents.

New parents stopped tracking around 10 months and they grew in confidence when raising their baby.

Define

The main concern were their baby's health:

The main concerns, goals, and motivations were similar between all of the new parents that I interviewed that all that I learned fit neatly into one persona. Due to the fact that health of their baby was the most important focus of new parents I decided to have a focus on health related matters I would include message screens for when a new parent should call the doctor. As well as a pediatrician finder.

After creating the persona I prioritized possible features that I could include in My Lil Boo. I chose to include guides and articles, health and habit trackers, as well as the option to customize these trackers. An analysis of the habits and health. as well as a chart to measure growth would get included.

Less essential, but still important features included a description of the current milestone at the top of the home page. and the ability to add a profile picture of your baby.

Design

Next I sketched out layouts:

I started out with sketching the wireframes. I tested out different layouts.

The low-fi to mid-fi was one of my favorite parts of the design process.

What are My Lil Boo's brand values?

Family Focused:

The most important brand values would be that My Lil Boo would be family focused. This website helps couples raise new babies, and create a family of their own. The logo would represent this brand values, as it would include a mom and a baby. Here is the final logo.

Education, focus on Health:

The second brand value is to be educational, with a focus on health. The main feature of this website is to help new parents navigate health related issues and questions they may have. We do this by providing them with guides, articles, messages on when to call their doctor, and a way to find a pediatrician near them. Later on I would add screens for the baby's vital signs so you can make sure your baby matches.

Reliability:

The third brand value is reliability, we want new parents to trust us, especially as health is a very serious issue. The font would represent this, as it would be a more simple and legible font. I also found a font that was very similar to another reliable baby related app.

Inviting and Friendly:

The fourth brand value is to have an inviting and friendly feel. This would also show on the font, as the font I chose has a bit of a fun personality.

This would mainly be represented by the color palette. I chose colors that have a friendly feel to them.

For the girl version I chose the primary color to be pink, as it is usually associated with baby girls. The boys version would be a blue-green, as that color is associated with baby boys. The secondary color for the girl version would be the blue green that was primary for the boy version. Vice versa for the boy version. This provides consistency across the versions, and would add to the recognition of my brand.

The text fields would be white for both versions.
